"Rainforests - Art's Forgotten Landscape"
Phil's last solo exhibition was at the Mawson Gallery, 63 Wilkins Street, Mawson ACT, from April 8 to May 3, 2009.
Prof Peter Kanowski was the guest speaker at the Exhibition Opening.
This exhibition explored aspects of various NSW rainforests. Featured were sub-tropical, warm temperate, cool temperate, and littoral rainforests of mainly northern NSW. These landscapes are characterised by diverse, multi-layered vegetation all completing for survival. In rainforests, your viewpoint is restricted to the foreground due to the high density of vegetation. Rainforest tree trunks, their buttress roots, and the draping sinuosity of lianas all produced fascinating combinations of texture, form and colour.
A gallery of the rainforest paintings on exhibition can be seen here.

Wollemi Pine Paintings
The extraordinary Wollemi Pine (Wollemia nobilis) was only discovered in 1994 by David Noble, an officer with the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service, in an isolated gorge in Wollemi National Park, west of Sydney NSW. Due to its rare conservation status, access to the Wollemi Pine stands has been restricted.
The Botanic Gardens Trust, Sydney photographer, Jaime Plaza, has been one of the few people allowed into the stands as part of continuing monitoring and research programs. In December 2005, Phil gained permission to view Jaime's many photographs and images with the intention of choosing a small number to develop into paintings. You can view a selection of Jaime's images here.
